Red Hot Chili Peppers é uma banda de rock dos Estados Unidos formada em Los Angeles, Califórnia em 1983. A banda vencedora dos Grammys, é composta por quatro membros, o vocalista Anthony Kiedis, o guitarrista John Frusciante, o baixista Michael "Flea" Balzary e o baterista Chad Smith. Assistindo a várias mudanças e a problemas pessoais de membros, o estilo da banda é variado, conseguindo juntar elementos do tradicional alternativo e funk com vários elementos de heavy metal, punk rock e rock psicodélico.

A cantora Cher foi babá do vocalista dos Red Hot Chili Peppers Anthony Kiedis. O guitarrista dos Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante pensou em fazer um teste para a banda de Frank Zappa, mas desistiu quando soube que ele proibia uso de drogas por seus músicos. Em 1988, Slovak, o primeiro guitarrista do grupo, morreu após uma overdose de cocaína. Quando o ator River Phoenix sofreu a overdose fatal na porta do Viper Room em Los Angeles, foi Flea (que estava com ele na balada)que o socorreu e o acompanhou até o hospital dentro da ambulância. No começo, o Red Hot Chili Peppers se chamava Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, que significa Tony Flow e os Miraculosos Majestosos Mestres da Mutilação. O grupo Red Hot Chili Peppers foi formado em 1983 na Califórnia pelo vocalista Anthony Kiedis e o baxista Flea (que já havia participado de uma banda chamada Fear), então alunos da Fairfax Highschool. A banda foi completada em sua primeira formação por Jack Sherman (guitarrista) e Cliff Martinez (baterista). Antes de assumirem seu nome definitivo usaram os nomes Los Faces e Miraculously... nos anos 80, o grupo fazia sucesso nas rádios universitárias dos EUA. O sucesso veio em 1989, quando a MTV americana passou a veicular "Higher Ground" ("Mother's Milk"), versão de um sucesso de Steve Wonder, em sua programação. O álbum seguinte, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", é até hoje o mais bem-sucedido do grupo. Entre as contribuições para trilhas sonoras, estão as músicas "Show Me Your Soul" ("Uma Linda Mulher"), "Soul to Squeeze" ("Coneheads") e "Love Rollercoaster" ("Beavis e Butthead Detonam a América"). Um fato curioso durante a turnê do Freaky Styley é que, em 1986, Kiedis toca em Grand Rapids, sua cidade natal pela primeira vez, e tem a "brilhante idéia" de usar as meias (Socks on Cocks), o que acaba sendo um escândalo na sua cidade, e ele vira a "ovelha-negra" do público de lá. O disco "By The Way" foi o primeiro a ter encarte feito de papel reciclado. Tocou numa banda chamada Toby Redd que em 2003 fez uma pequena reunião que pode ser vista na web. Flea tem um 10 tatuado no braço, logo abaixo do nome de sua filha Clara. Flea tatuou 'papaya' (mamão) no braço direito, devido ao fato de que ele adora comer mamão quando vem à America Latina. Flea começou a entrar na música com o jazz, tocando trompete desde muito cedo. Só entrou no rock quando Hillel Slovak resolveu mostrá-lo várias coisas que ouvia. Flea nasceu na Austrália mas mudou-se para Nova Iorque quando criança com seus pais e irmãs. Após a separação de seus pais mudou-se para Los Angeles. Chad Gaylord Smith, nasceu em 25 de outubro de 1961, em St. Paul, Minessota. É o membro mais velho da banda. Chad começou a tocar bateria aos sete anos de idade e seu primeiro kit foi feito com caixas de sorvete. Chad Smith costumava ser barulhento mas adquiriu a pegada funk que tem hoje em dia com o percussionista do P-Funk, Larry Fratangelo, quando tocava na banda Pharaoh em Detroit.
